Oxford College of Garden Design – Meet the tutors

Duncan Heather, Principal and Director

Duncan Heather is one of Europe’s most respected garden designers. To date, he has won five gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal, plus three Best of Show Awards for his design work.

He was trained by the renowned landscape designer and author John Brookes. In 1991 he was offered a directorship with John Brookes, but declined to concentrate on his own design practice.

From 2004 to 2007, Duncan sat on the SGD (Society of Garden Designers) council. He was responsible for creating the first industry-standard fee scale, and the first standard contract.

Duncan is co-author of The Heather Specification, and is a regular lecturer for the SGD. He lives in Oxfordshire and continues to undertake design projects around the world, from tiny courtyard gardens to large country estates.

Hannah Smith Course Tutor

Before retraining in garden design, she spent over a decade working in corporate strategy and project management, for a global fast-moving consumer goods company. She has a degree in accounting and a deep interest in design and spatial psychology.
She set up her own design practice based in Berkershire and now designs gardens for private clients and undertakes commercial designs and planting schemes for hotels and schools working
with Architects, Property developers and Landscape contractors.

John Heather, Senior Construction Lecturer

John Heather trained as an architect at the Architectural Association before joining a private practice, and eventually working for a local authority.

He is now a visiting lecturer at several of the UK’s leading design schools and is widely respected as the foremost expert in his field.

John wrote the industry standard specification now adopted by the Society of Garden Designers.
