Oxford College of Garden Design – Meet the tutors

Duncan Heather, Principal and Director

Duncan Heather is one of Europe’s most respected garden designers. To date, he has won five gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal, plus three Best of Show Awards for his design work.

He was trained by the renowned landscape designer and author John Brookes. In 1991 he was offered a directorship with John Brookes, but declined to concentrate on his own design practice.

From 2004 to 2007, Duncan sat on the SGD (Society of Garden Designers) council. He was responsible for creating the first industry-standard fee scale, and the first standard contract.

Duncan is co-author of The Heather Specification, and is a regular lecturer for the SGD. He lives in Oxfordshire and continues to undertake design projects around the world, from tiny courtyard gardens to large country estates.

Susan Dunstall, Senior Design Tutor

Susan Dunstall’s background is in project management consultancy — an essential skill which ensures projects are delivered on time and within budget.

After qualifying with distinction as a landscape designer, Susan set up her own design practice near Burford in the Cotswolds. She designs gardens for private clients. Susan also undertakes commercial designs and planting schemes for hotels and schools, working with architects, property developers and landscape contractors.

John Heather, Senior Construction Lecturer

John Heather trained as an architect at the Architectural Association before joining a private practice, and eventually working for a local authority.

He is now a visiting lecturer at several of the UK’s leading design schools and is widely respected as the foremost expert in his field.

John wrote the industry standard specification now adopted by the Society of Garden Designers.
